If you are a coffee lover,
you are probably consistently searching for that perfect cup. Sure, the perfect
cup starts with the perfect bean. Simply to said, the perfect bean is largely
based upon the combination of soil quality and climate.
Indonesia
is the fourth largest coffee exporter in the world after Brazil, Colombia and
Vietnam. Indonesia is a place with regular rain and sun that able to produce
specialty coffee. But, did you know that coffee-producing regions with high taste
(specialty coffee) in Indonesia, mostly resulting from the underdeveloped
districts.
Specialty
coffee production in Indonesia, mostly from underdeveloped areas such as Gayo
coffee from Aceh, Mandailaing coffee from Sumatra, Liwa coffee from Lampung
coffee and Toraja coffee from Tana Toraja. Some of these places are still rural
or underdeveloped areas with minimal infrastructure.

Increasing
system of coffee cultivation surely can contribute to people in underdeveloped
areas. However, they have not touched the coffee processing industry. Some
coffee-producing areas are still difficult to meet export demand. This is
because the farmers are still using manual methods. In addition, modern coffee
processing equipment also has a very expensive price.
It
was submitted by the Deputy Assistant affairs Ministry of Rural Development
Investments Indonesia, Endang Supriani. She said that some regions or districts
have the potential lagging coffee seed with high taste like coffee Arabica and
Robusta. At least, there are 183 districts that have the potential lagging
regions superior coffee or specialty coffee. She said the productivity of
coffee-producing regions lagging in general is very low due to several factors,
such as lack of human resources and post-harvest processing of coffee.
Due
to low productivity, then this makes the results of Indonesian coffee only
reached 0.7 to 0.8 tons per hectare per year. Meanwhile, Vietnam who has
learned its coffee cultivation in Indonesia can produce coffee per year 2.5
tons per hectare. This value would have a huge difference. Even though, Indonesia
has the larger area that able to produce coffee.
The
Indonesian government has homework to fix it. The potential is very large. If
can be developed and managed optimally, Indonesia will be able to surpass the
major coffee producing country to another. Indonesia has a land and a favorable
climate. Therefore, Indonesia has an opportunity to improve the welfare of
society through the coffee.
